Rasheen
Masculine · “rightly guided”
Rasheen is given to both — 1,395 boys and 95 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Rasheen sits between an Arabic name and an American ending. Rashid means rightly guided, and it is one of the words used of God in Islamic tradition as well as the byname of the caliph who presides over the Thousand and One Nights. The -een ending is the American contribution: it fixes the long vowel for an English reader in a way that the standard transliterations leave open.

The story of Rasheen
Harun al-Rashid ruled the Abbasid caliphate at the height of Baghdad's power and became, through the stories collected as the Thousand and One Nights, one of the most widely known figures of the medieval world — his byname means the rightly guided, and it traveled with him. The name entered American use through two channels at once: Arab migration, and African American families choosing Arabic names in the second half of the twentieth century. Rasheen belongs to the second stream, where spellings were adapted freely to English reading habits rather than to transliteration convention.
Meaningscholars disagree
rightly guided
If the name is a form of Rashid, the meaning is well documented: from an Arabic root meaning to follow the right course, to be sensible and well directed. If it was built from the Ra- opening and the -sheen ending, on the pattern of the American names of its generation, then no meaning attaches. Both are plausible and the record does not choose.

Two syllables with the stress at the back, which the -een spelling makes unambiguous. That clarity is the whole point of writing it this way rather than as Rashin or Rashine.

The Shigeru test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Rasheen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Shigeru climbed just as high around 1918, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Shigeru's path sketches the road Rasheen is walking now.
Rasheen sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The ending removes any doubt about the vowel and the stress, which the standard spellings do not.
- It shortens two ways, and the two short forms are completely unlike each other.
- It sits close to a widely used and well-regarded Arabic name, so it is never entirely unfamiliar.
- Rasheen, Rashaan, Rashawn and Rasheem all occupy nearby ground and will be confused.
- The connection to Rashid is invisible to most readers, so the name's dignity has to be explained rather than seen.
- Nearly every child given this spelling is a boy, though the same ending appears on women's names.
