Aneesh
Masculine · “having no master”
Indian English doubles a vowel to say it is long. Aneesh, Ranjeet, Naveen, Sudheer, Praveen: the ee is not decoration, it is a length mark, invented because English vowel spellings are too unreliable to trust with a name.

The story of Aneesh
The transliteration problem is real and Indian English solved it consistently. English writes a long ee sound as ee, ea, ie, e-consonant-e, i and y, with no rule that helps a reader; Indian languages distinguish long and short vowels as a matter of grammar, and losing the distinction changes words. So writers doubled the letter, and the convention spread across names, place names and dictionaries. The name itself carries the Sanskrit negative prefix a-, which is the same one behind ahimsa, non-violence, and is a distant cousin of the Greek a- in atheist — both inherited from a common ancestor rather than borrowed.

having no master; supreme
Sanskrit anisha is read as a-nisha, without a lord — a negation of isha, master or ruler, and used as an epithet of Vishnu. A second Sanskrit word spelled almost the same means continuous or unceasing. The two readings are both offered and neither is settled for the modern name.

The trade-off
- The spelling enforces the vowel, which is the whole reason it is written that way.
- Two syllables with nothing difficult for an English speaker.
- It is a current, ordinary name in India rather than a revival.
- Anish is the commoner spelling in India and both are correct.
- The two possible Sanskrit readings mean quite different things.
- It is close enough to Anish, Anisha and Ashish to be misheard as any of them.
