Netanya
Feminine · “gift of God”
Netanya is the woman's form of the name behind Nathan, and it is also a city on the Mediterranean coast of Israel. The city was named in the nineteen-twenties for an American: Nathan Straus, the New York merchant and philanthropist who had funded a great deal of work in the region. The Hebrew word and the man's name are the same word.

The story of Netanya
Nathan Straus co-owned a department store in New York, campaigned for pasteurized milk, and gave away most of his fortune, a great deal of it to health work in Palestine. When a coastal town was founded in the nineteen-twenties it was named Netanya, which honored him and was at the same time an ordinary Hebrew word meaning gift of God. The name reached American records mostly through Jewish families, either as a Hebrew name in its own right or with the city in mind. It has no relationship at all to the surname it resembles, which belongs to a different Hebrew name entirely.
Meaning
gift of God
Netanya joins natan, he gave, with a short form of the divine name — the Lord has given, or God's gift. It is the same construction as Jonathan and Nathaniel, differing only in the order of the elements and the ending. The name existed as a Hebrew word long before the city did; the city took it because it made a Hebrew name out of the donor's English one, which is the sort of double meaning Israeli place-naming was fond of.

Pronouncing Netanya
neh-TAHN-yuh
neh-TAHN-yuh, three syllables, stress in the middle. Hebrew puts more weight on the final syllable, neh-tan-YAH. English readers sometimes produce neh-TAN-ee-uh in four, treating the y as a vowel, which is not how either language says it.

The Ladelle test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Netanya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ladelle climbed just as high around 1924, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ladelle's path sketches the road Netanya is walking now.
Netanya sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is settled, warm and easy to explain in three words.
- Tanya is waiting inside it as a short form that needs no introduction anywhere.
- It has both a real Hebrew derivation and a real place attached, which few names manage.
- It looks very like a well-known Israeli surname that is an entirely different name, and the confusion is immediate and political.
- Netanya, Netania and Nataniya are all plausible transliterations, so the spelling gets asked about.
- Three syllables with the stress in the middle is easy enough, but the y in the last syllable trips readers who expect a vowel.
