Nataniel
Masculine · “God has given”
Nataniel is the Spanish and Portuguese spelling of Nathanael, and the difference is one letter: Spanish has no th sound, so the h that English keeps has nothing to do. The name is Hebrew and means that God has given, and it belongs to a small group of names — with Jonathan, Elnathan and Matthew — built out of the same idea in different arrangements.

The story of Nataniel
Nathanael appears in the Gospel of John as one of the first disciples, the man from Cana whom Jesus sees under the fig tree; he is traditionally identified with the Bartholomew of the other gospels. That gave the name Christian standing. English-speaking Protestants took it up at the Reformation and it has been in continuous use since, usually as Nathaniel with an i. Spanish and Portuguese produced Nataniel, dropping the h that their orthographies cannot use, and it is common in Mexico, Central America and Brazil. American records show it rising with Spanish-speaking migration and peaking in 1991.
Meaning
God has given
Hebrew Netanel joins natan, 'he gave', to el, 'God'. Reverse the elements and you get Elnathan; swap the divine name and you get Jonathan, from Yehonatan, 'Yahweh has given'. Matthew is the same idea again through a different Hebrew root, Mattityahu. Semitic naming built freely from a small stock of such elements, and this family shows the system working. The derivation is settled.

The Tarius test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nataniel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tarius climbed just as high around 1973, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tarius's path sketches the road Nataniel is walking now.

The trade-off
