Where it comes from

The story of Natania

Nathan Straus, born in Bavaria in 1848 and raised in Georgia, ran R H Macy with his brother and spent much of his fortune on public health, distributing pasteurised milk to the poor of New York and funding health stations in Palestine. When settlers founded a town on the coast north of Tel Aviv in 1929 they named it Netanya for him, using the Hebrew name that matches his own. The city grew into one of Israel's largest, and the name traveled outward from it as a girl's name in Hebrew-speaking and Jewish American families. Its American spelling, Natania, smooths the Hebrew to something an English reader can pronounce. Very few names make that circuit: an American man's given name becomes an Israeli city and comes back as an American girl's name three generations later.

Natania sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2004, with 36 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Natania went to 9 girls in 2025, but Natanya is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 15, which makes it the 945th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,162 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 107,151 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 178,585 for Natania itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
