Natanya
Feminine · “gift of God”
Netanya is a city on the Israeli coast, founded in 1929 and named after an American philanthropist called Nathan Straus — who gave a great deal of money to public health and never lived there. The name is also a Hebrew phrase in its own right: netan-yah, a gift of God, which is the same construction that gives Nathaniel and Jonathan.

The story of Natanya
Nathan Straus co-owned a department store, spent a fortune on milk pasteurization stations that saved a great many children's lives, and gave heavily to Palestine; the town founded in the 1920s took his name in Hebrew form. The phrase behind it was already an old one. Natanya appears in American records from 1961, arriving through Jewish families, and it has stayed rare here — one of a set of modern Hebrew names built from ordinary vocabulary rather than inherited from the Bible.
Meaning
gift of God
From the Hebrew natan, he gave, and yah, a short form of the divine name. The same two elements build Nathaniel and Jonathan, with the pieces in different orders. It is a statement rather than a wish, and it was given by parents who considered the matter settled.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Samra test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Natanya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Samra climbed just as high around 1953, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Samra's path sketches the road Natanya is walking now.
Natanya sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
