The story of Nastassia
The Russian diminutive system is one of the most elaborate in Europe and it is not decoration: the suffix a speaker chooses places the relationship. Ivan gives Vanya, Vanechka, Vanyusha and Vanka, and using the wrong one is a social error. Anastasia is unusually productive even by that standard. The name itself came east with Greek Christianity, was carried by an early martyr whose feast falls at Christmas, and became one of the most given names in Russia. It also has a masculine: Anastasius belonged to four popes and a Byzantine emperor, which most people using the woman's name never discover.
Meaning
resurrection; standing up again
Greek anastasis, a rising up, from ana, up, and stasis, standing. It was an Easter name in the Greek church. Nastassia is a Slavic short form written out with a Latin alphabet, and the doubled s is a transliteration choice rather than a Russian one.

The Armanda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nastassia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Armanda climbed just as high around 1913, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Armanda's path sketches the road Nastassia is walking now.
Nastassia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Greek meaning and an unbroken record of seventeen hundred years.
- Three short forms, all of them used in Slavic households rather than invented here.
- Four open syllables with a clear stress and no cluster anywhere.
- Anastasia and Nastasia are both commoner in America, so the spelling will be given.
- Four syllables is long and it will be shortened by other people.
- The Russian short form, Nastya, sounds harsher to English ears than it does to Russian ones.
