Armanda
Feminine · “Fit to be loved”
Armanda records a sound that is not there. English speakers who drop their r's at the end of a syllable often put one back where it does not belong, and Amanda becomes Armanda in the mouth before it becomes Armanda on the page. The spelling is a faithful account of a real habit.

The story of Armanda
The most consequential Armand ran France for eighteen years without ever being its king. Armand Jean du Plessis, made a cardinal and then chief minister, took a country broken by religious war and built a centralized state on top of it: he broke the political power of the Protestant towns while leaving their worship alone, kept France out of the Thirty Years War until it suited him and then entered on the Protestant side against a Catholic emperor, and founded the academy that still regulates the French language. He was disliked by nearly everybody and effective beyond any minister before him, and the name he carried was a French shape of a Germanic compound that has nothing to do with the Latin behind Amanda. The two names meet only in this spelling, and only by accident.
Meaning
Fit to be loved
If the name is Amanda with an inserted r, the Latin is a grammatical form meaning she who must be loved or is worthy of loving, which is the sort of thing Latin can say in one word. If the name is instead a feminine of Armand, the source is Germanic and quite different. The spelling supports both readings, and no record preserves which a family meant.

Fashion outlook
Armanda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It works unchanged in Italian, Portuguese and French, which the plainer spelling does not.
- Mandy is waiting inside it as an entirely ordinary everyday name.
- Three syllables with the stress in the middle is the easiest shape there is for an English speaker to say.
- Amanda is enormously commoner and this will be read as a slip by people trying to be helpful.
- The r is audible in some accents and inaudible in others, so the spelling means different things in different places.
- Two possible sources means two possible meanings, and the record does not choose.
