Mylo is the y-spelled cousin of Milo, a name Latin scribes were writing down in the Middle Ages and Norman clerks carried into England alongside Miles. Two syllables, a long open first vowel, and an -o ending that lands the same way Arlo, Theo and Leo do. The spelling with a y is the newer arrangement, but the name behind it has been in circulation for a very long time.

How old is the name Mylo?

Where it comes from

The story of Mylo

The name arrives through medieval Latin Milo, used across France, Germany and the Low Countries, and brought into England after the Norman Conquest, where records show it interchanging with Miles. It faded into a scholarly, bookish name in English for centuries, then returned in the modern period, chiefly in the plain Milo spelling. Mylo is the recent respelling, swapping the i for the y already familiar from Myles — a change that keeps the sound exactly and only alters the look. The spelling also stands as the title of Coldplay's 2011 album Mylo Xyloto, where it is an invented word rather than a reference to the given name.

Not established

Milo, the parent form, has two serious readings and no agreement between them. One traces it to the Slavic root mil-, 'dear, gracious' — the same element in Milan and Milos. The other links it to Latin miles, 'soldier', through the medieval pairing of Milo with Miles. A separate ancient Greek name, Milon, was Latinized as Milo too, which muddies the line further rather than settling it.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Mylo went to 357 boys in 2025, but Milo and Miloh are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 3,381, which makes it the 110th most-given boys’ name of the year — 626 places above the chart.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Reads correctly on sight for English speakers — the sound is unmistakable even for people meeting the spelling for the first time.
  • Instantly placed thanks to Milo, so it needs no explanation of what kind of name it is.
  • The underlying name has an unbroken record from medieval Latin through Norman England to the present day.
  • Sits in the same -o family as Arlo, Theo and Leo, so it pairs easily with common surnames.
  • Short enough to need no nickname, which keeps a child in control of what they are called.
What to consider
  • Milo is the far more familiar spelling, so expect a lifetime of 'Milo — with a y?' at doctor's offices, on coffee cups and in email. It is a small, permanent correction rather than a problem.
  • The current wave is very recent, so nearly everyone carrying this spelling is a young child. That means little confusion now, and a name that will read as belonging to one generation later on.
  • Milo is a well-known name for dogs and, outside the US, a Nestlé malt drink — associations that attach to the i-spelling but travel close enough to be worth knowing.
