Hugh
Masculine · “heart”
Hugh is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 83,825 boys against 354 girls since 1880.
Hugh came into English with the Normans, a single soft syllable that has never needed shortening and never picked up a second spelling of any weight. It was the name of Hugh Capet, the tenth-century French king whose descendants ruled for centuries, and of Hugh of Lincoln, the Carthusian bishop of twelfth-century England. In the mouth it is one clean breath — a name that ends almost before it begins.

The story of Hugh
The name began as a Germanic given element, hug, and traveled into French as Hugues, where it belonged to Hugh Capet, king of the Franks in the late tenth century and founder of the Capetian line. The Normans carried it across the Channel, and after the Conquest it became one of the most-used men's names in medieval England — Hugh of Lincoln, the Carthusian monk who became bishop there in the twelfth century, is its best-known English bearer. Later, English speakers in Ireland and Scotland reached for Hugh as a substitute for the native names Aodh and Ùisdean, which sounded nothing like it but were given the same English dress. So a boy called Hugh today may sit on a Frankish root, an Irish one, or both at once.

The trade-off
- One syllable, four letters, no competing spellings in English — it is written the same way wherever it appears.
- An unbroken record from the medieval period to now, in England, France, Ireland and Scotland.
- Travels easily: relatives who speak Spanish, French, Italian or Welsh already have a form of it.
- Two long-established short forms, Hughie and Huey, both in real use for generations.
- The silent gh trips people up. Expect Hue, Hew, or a puzzled pause before someone says it aloud for the first time.
- Over the phone it can blur into you or who, so the spelling gets given more often than with most short names.
- It is far more strongly represented among older generations than among children, so a young Hugh may be introduced as "named after" someone even when he isn't.
- Hugo now reads as the more current cousin, and some people will assume Hugh is short for it rather than a name of its own.
