Where each name comes from
Hugh
heart, mind, spirit
The root is the Germanic element hug, carrying the linked senses of heart, mind and thought.
Hug → Hugo → Hugues → Hugh
How it traveled
The name began as a Germanic given element, hug, and traveled into French as Hugues, where it belonged to Hugh Capet, king of the Franks in the late tenth century and founder of the Capetian line. The Normans carried it across the Channel, and after the Conquest it became one of the most-used men's names in medieval England — Hugh of Lincoln, the Carthusian monk who became bishop there in the twelfth century, is its best-known English bearer.
Marcel
of Mars, at one remove
Marcel is the French form of a Roman diminutive of Marcus, so the name is small-Marcus, and Marcus is generally connected to the god. French has kept it in ordinary use for centuries. It reached America with French, Belgian and Haitian families and with African American families in the twentieth century, and it has never been rare enough to disappear or common enough to date.
a Roman diminutive of Marcus → Marcel established in French use → carried to Haiti Belgium and America → a novelist rewrites a novel on the proofs → steady American use for a century and a half
How it traveled
The most famous scene in the book was originally about toast. In an early draft the narrator dips a piece of dry toast in tea and the memory arrives; by the published version it is a small shell-shaped cake, which is a better object in every way — more specific, more local, and shaped like something scallop-backed and slightly absurd.

Out loud, and in short
Hugh
HYOO
One syllable, rhyming with few. The gh is silent; some American speakers drop the y and say YOO.
- Hughie — The standard affectionate form, long established in Scotland and Ireland as well as the US.
- Huey — Informal, and also given as a name in its own right.
- Shug — A Scottish familiar form of Hugh, used chiefly in Scotland rather than the US.
Marcel
mar-SEL
Two syllables with the stress at the back. The c before an e is soft in French and in English alike, which makes this one of the easier French names for an English speaker.
- Cel — The back of the name; short and rarely written.
- Marco — A neighboring form used as a short one, and a complete name.

The trade-offs, name by name
Hugh
Strengths
- One syllable, four letters, no competing spellings in English — it is written the same way wherever it appears.
- An unbroken record from the medieval period to now, in England, France, Ireland and Scotland.
- Travels easily: relatives who speak Spanish, French, Italian or Welsh already have a form of it.
To consider
- The silent gh trips people up. Expect Hue, Hew, or a puzzled pause before someone says it aloud for the first time.
- Over the phone it can blur into you or who, so the spelling gets given more often than with most short names.
- It is far more strongly represented among older generations than among children, so a young Hugh may be introduced as "named after" someone even when he isn't.
Marcel
Strengths
- It works in French, Spanish, Italian and English without changing a letter.
- It is short, elegant and has never belonged to a single decade.
- The meaning is ancient and easy to explain.
To consider
- It reads as distinctly French, which may be exactly right or may not.
- Marcelle is the feminine and is close enough to cause occasional confusion.
- The short forms are thin — there is not much to cut.
