Ander is the Basque form of Andrew, in steady use across the Basque Country on both sides of the Pyrenees, and it carries a two-thousand-year-old Greek name in a shape of its own. Two syllables, every letter sounded, nothing to explain. In American records it is familiar without being everywhere — a name a class is likely to hold only one of.

How old is the name Ander?

Ander first appears in US birth records in 1908 — 117 years ago. The typical Ander is a kid of about 4 — this name's wave is very recent. About 4,300 people named Ander are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Ander most popular?

Ander peaked in 2023, reaching #566 nationally. Today it ranks #728, 162 places below that high. See the whole 2023 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Ander

The root is Greek Andreas, built on andros, "of a man," and it spread across Europe as Andrew, André, Andrés, Anders and Andrea. Basque took the Spanish Andrés and reworked it into Ander, which remains a normal, well-used men's name in the Basque provinces of Spain and France today. In the United States a second road runs alongside it: Ander also turns up as a clipped form of Anders and of the surname-name Anderson. Both roads lead back to the same Greek word, which is a tidy thing for one short name.

Meaning

man, manly — from Greek anēr, andros

The sense belongs to Andreas, the Greek name behind the whole family; Ander is the Basque form of it.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Crosses English and Spanish without changing spelling or losing its shape — useful in bilingual families and in states where both languages are spoken daily.
  • Belongs to the Andrew family, one of the longest unbroken naming lines in Europe, so it comes with real history rather than a recent invention.
  • Two syllables, five letters, no silent letters and one obvious stress — easy to say correctly on first sight.
  • Short already, with the familiar Andy available if a nickname is ever wanted.
What to consider
  • Expect a stray S. People who know Anders or Anderson will add one, and the name will often be read back as one of those instead.
  • Ander also sits inside Alexander, so some listeners will assume it is a nickname for something longer and ask what the full name is.
  • It is rare enough in the US that most people will have no template for it — a small, lifelong habit of spelling it out, which is the ordinary cost of an uncrowded name.
