Huxley
Masculine · Old English roots · “woodland clearing”
Huxley is given to both — 4,734 boys and 496 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Huxley began as a patch of Cheshire woodland, became the surname of a family that shaped English science and letters, and only lately stepped forward as a first name. It has the same brisk two-beat shape as Finley and Bentley, but with that hard x in the middle doing all the work. Say it once and it stays said.

Where it comes from
From Hucc (Old English personal name) + lēah to Huxley
The story of Huxley
Huxley is a village and parish in Cheshire, in the northwest of England, and like most English surnames of its kind it began as a way of saying where a family had come from. It traveled from place to person to page: the Huxleys became one of Britain's notable intellectual families across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, published in 1932, put the name in front of readers everywhere. The step from surname to given name is recent, part of a broad American habit of moving English surnames to the front — and unlike many of those, this one arrived with a literary shelf already behind it.
Meaningscholars disagree
woodland clearing — the first element is disputed
The second part is Old English lēah, 'clearing, meadow', the same element behind hundreds of English place names. The first part is read either as the Old English personal name Hucc, giving 'Hucc's clearing', or as Old English hux, 'insult, mockery' — a less flattering but seriously argued alternative. Place-name scholars have not closed the case.

HUKS-lee
Stress on the first syllable. There is only one way to say it in English, and the spelling gives it away, so a Huxley rarely has to correct anyone out loud.

The Edison test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Huxley's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Edison climbed just as high around 1917, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Edison's path sketches the road Huxley is walking now.
Huxley sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- One spelling, one pronunciation — the surname is famous enough in English that most people write it correctly on the first try.
- Documented for centuries as a Cheshire place name and an English surname, so it is new as a first name without being newly invented.
- Hux is a ready-made short form, and Huck is there too — useful for a name that is otherwise formal in shape.
- The -ley ending sits comfortably beside names American ears already know, while the middle x keeps it distinct.
- Brave New World is the first thing many adults think of. It is a dystopia, and some people will mention it every time — usually as a compliment to the reading, sometimes not.
- The name's rise is very recent and very concentrated, so it reads clearly as belonging to this stretch of years. A Huxley will mostly meet other Huxleys who are children.
- Rarity cuts both ways: almost certainly no second one in the class, but also a name people will occasionally ask him to repeat, and one that carries no family or cultural tradition to lean on unless you give it one.
