The story of Bruno
The name is Germanic and old, carried by nobility in the Rhineland long before it spread south and east. Bruno the Great, Archbishop of Cologne and brother of Emperor Otto I, held it in the tenth century; Bruno of Cologne, who founded the Carthusian order, held it in the eleventh and was later canonized. Two eleventh-century popes were born Bruno before taking their papal names. From that German-Latin base it settled into Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish and French, and traveled to the Americas with speakers of all of them — which is why it holds strongest in the big immigrant-shaped states rather than in one region.

The usual reading is Old High German brun, 'brown'. A second line of scholarship connects it instead to Germanic brunja, 'breastplate, armor' — a common element in early Germanic names. Both readings are taken seriously; neither has pushed the other out.
