Monae
Feminine
Monae ends in a digraph that English does not really use and French no longer does. The -ae ending reads as French to American eyes even though French would write it differently, and that mismatch is precisely why it works as a naming device. Monae's American peak is 1996, which predates its best-known bearer by more than a decade.

Our story of Monae
The -ae ending is a good example of a spelling that signals a language it does not come from. In French, a final -ee or an accented -ee marks a feminine past participle and turns up in Renee, Aimee and Desiree, all of which entered American naming and were widely admired. American families wanting the same effect reached for a French-looking ending, and -ae was available: it looks continental, it is unmistakably not an ordinary English spelling, and it produces the same long-a sound. So Renae, Janae, Shanae and Monae were made, none of them French and all of them signaling French. Linguists call this kind of borrowing hyperforeignism — using a marker of foreignness in a way the source language never would — and it is one of the most reliable engines of new spelling in English.

No documented source. The front is probably Mona, which has genuine and separate sources — Irish Muadhnait, a diminutive of a word for noble; Arabic Muna, 'wishes'; and Italian monna, 'lady', as in Mona Lisa. The -ae ending is an American spelling device with no content, found also in Renae, Janae and Shanae. Whether Monae descends from Mona or was built directly cannot be determined.

The Valeri test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Monae's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Valeri climbed just as high around 1959, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Valeri's path sketches the road Monae is walking now.
