Where it comes from

The story of Mizael

The book of Daniel gives its four young exiles two sets of names, their Hebrew ones and the Babylonian ones imposed at court, and the story keeps both in view: Mishael becomes Meshach, Hananiah becomes Shadrach. The furnace scene made the three of them a fixture of Christian art and preaching. Spanish took the Hebrew name as Misael and Mizael, and it has been widely given in Mexico, Central America and Brazil, where it is more common than in any English-speaking country.

Meaning

who is what God is?

Hebrew Mishael, generally read as mi, who, sha, that which, and El, God: a rhetorical question of the same kind as Michael, who is like God. The reading has been standard for a very long time.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Mizael went to 20 boys in 2025, but Misael is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 379, which makes it the 581st most-given boys’ name of the year — 4,276 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 4,507 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 85,404 for Mizael itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It carries one of the best-known stories in the Hebrew Bible, and one with a happy ending.
  • The meaning is a real question rather than a description, which is unusual and memorable.
  • It is widely used across Latin America, so it arrives with a community.
What to consider
  • Misael is the commoner Spanish spelling, so the z will be corrected often.
  • The English and Spanish pronunciations differ enough to be two names.
  • English readers know the bearer by his Babylonian name, Meshach, so the connection is invisible.
