Mishell writes down what French refuses to. In Michelle the ch is doing the work of an sh, which is regular French and completely opaque to an English or Spanish reader meeting it cold. This spelling replaces the ch with the letters that actually make the sound, and it is far more at home in Quito or Lima than anywhere in France.

Where it comes from

The story of Mishell

Michelle became widely used across Latin America in the second half of the twentieth century, and Spanish speakers writing it did what any language does with a borrowed spelling: applied their own rules. Spanish has no ch that sounds like sh, so the sound was written the way Spanish would write it if it could, and Mishell, Michel and Mishelle all appear in Latin American records. The single final l belongs to the same logic — Spanish does not double its l in that position. The result is a spelling that is phonetically honest in one language and looks like an error in another.

Meaning

who is like God?

The name descends from Michael, whose Hebrew is a rhetorical question — who is like God — and which reached French as Michel and then Michelle. The meaning survives every respelling intact. What the sh does is separate the spelling from the etymology: a reader who sees Michelle can trace it back through French to Hebrew, and a reader who sees Mishell cannot, because the visible link to Michael has been removed along with the ch.

Mishell sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2005, with 17 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is phonetically transparent in English and Spanish alike, which Michelle is not.
  • It is a standard Latin American spelling rather than a respelling, which matters in a bilingual household.
  • The stress at the end sits well against almost any surname.
What to consider
  • In English-speaking settings it reads as a misspelling of a very familiar name, and it will be corrected on sight.
  • The single l invites a further correction, so there are two changes to defend rather than one.
  • Removing the ch also removes the visible connection to Michael, which is the part of the history most people recognize.
