In Old and Middle English it meant pleasant, agreeable, sweet, and it could describe weather, music, a landscape or a companion; the merry month of May is a pleasant month, not a laughing one, and merry England is an agreeable country. By the sixteenth century it had narrowed toward mirth, and by the nineteenth it had picked up the suggestion of drink that makes merry an awkward word in some settings now. The Christmas greeting is a fossil of the older, wider sense, formed when merry still meant pleasant, which is also why it sounds warmer than happy without anyone being able to say why.
