The story of Mery
The Egyptian case for Miriam rests on company rather than on the word alone. Moses is transparently Egyptian, containing the element mose, born of, which ends Thutmose and Ahmose. Phinehas is Egyptian for the Nubian. Hophni and Merari are also argued to be Egyptian. If Miriam, the sister of Moses and Aaron, belongs to that group, then the family at the center of the exodus narrative carries a set of Egyptian names, which is either evidence of genuine Egyptian contact or a remarkable piece of invention by a later writer. The alternative Hebrew derivations have all been proposed and none has held: the connection to mar, bitter, is a folk etymology of the kind the biblical text makes about other names, and the connection to a root for rebellion is worse. The honest position is that the most common woman's name in Western history has no established meaning.
