Melanny
Feminine · “dark”
Melanie is dark. The Greek melas means black, and it is the root inside melanin and melancholy; the name belonged to two Roman noblewomen of the fourth and fifth centuries who gave away enormous fortunes. Melanny is the Latin American spelling, with the ending doubled the way Spanish sometimes doubles a consonant to fix a sound.

The story of Melanny
Two Roman women called Melania, a grandmother and a granddaughter, were among the wealthiest people in the empire and gave nearly all of it away in the years around the fall of Rome; their names kept the word alive in Christian use. Medieval France made it Melanie, and English took it from there, with a nineteenth-century novel doing a good deal to popularize it in America. Latin American families adopted it in the late twentieth century and respelled it for Spanish, producing Melany, Melanny and Melani.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off
- The meaning is a single word with a large family of English relatives to point at.
- Mel works as a short form and needs no explaining.
- It bridges Spanish-speaking and English-speaking households with only a shift of stress.
- Melanie is the English standard and this spelling will be corrected on American forms.
- Melany, Melani and Melanny are all used in Spanish, so records within a family may differ.
- The stress moves between the two languages, giving the child two versions of her name.
