Melany
Feminine · “black”
Melany is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 17,379 girls against 5 boys since 1880.
Melany carries a name that has been in use since late antiquity, when Melania the Elder and her granddaughter Melania the Younger were known across the Roman world. The sound has stayed remarkably steady in all that time — three light syllables, stress at the front, nothing to trip over. The -y ending puts it in company with Emily, Dorothy and Sally, all names English speakers once wrote that way as a matter of course.

The story of Melany
The name begins as Greek Melania and was carried into Latin Christianity by two Roman women of the fourth and fifth centuries, Melania the Elder and Melania the Younger, both later venerated as saints. Norman French turned it into Mélanie, which is how it reached England, where it stayed quiet for centuries before a broad revival in the twentieth. Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel Gone with the Wind, and the film that followed, put Melanie in front of an enormous audience and the name climbed steadily afterward. Melany is the same name with the older English -y ending, and it is a spelling widely used in Spanish-speaking communities — which fits its strength in Texas, California and Florida.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. The trade-off
- A documented line back to late antiquity, with the same core sound intact from Greek Melania through French Mélanie to today.
- Everyone already knows how to say it — the pronunciation rides on Melanie, which needs no explanation anywhere in the English-speaking world.
- Works in Spanish and English without adjustment, which matters in bilingual families.
- Several established short forms — Mel, Mela, Laney — rather than none at all.
- Currently gaining ground rather than fading, so it reads as contemporary without being newly invented.
- Melanie is by far the better-known spelling, so Melany will be corrected, autocorrected and re-spelled by teachers, doctors and forms for life. Most families with a variant spelling settle into a short verbal formula for it early.
- The two pronunciations, MEL-uh-nee and meh-LAH-nee, both attach to this spelling. Worth deciding which one is yours, since strangers will guess based on their own background.
- Mel is shared territory with Melissa, Melinda and Melody, so a Mel in a room is not always the same Mel.
- The name is climbing, so it is likelier to be familiar to her classmates' parents in a few years than it is right now — familiar, but still not crowded.
