Briar is an ordinary English word promoted to a name: the thorny wild rose that grows along hedgerows and takes over neglected ground. It has been in the language since Old English, and in the Grimms' tale it gave the sleeping princess her hidden name, Briar Rose. Two syllables, one plain spelling, and a sound that rhymes with fire and higher.

From brēr (Old English) to Briar
The story of Briar
Briar began as a common noun, not a name — brēr in Old English, brere in Middle English, the tangle of thorn and wild rose at the edge of a field. It became a surname before it became a first name, in the way English occupation and landscape words often did. Its life as a given name rests largely on one story: the Brothers Grimm's Dornröschen, published in their collection in the early nineteenth century and Englished as 'Little Briar-Rose', where the princess sleeps behind a wall of thorns. Disney's 1959 Sleeping Beauty gave the same princess the alias Briar Rose, which put the word in front of a very large audience as a name rather than a plant.
Meaning
thorny shrub; wild rose bush
From Old English brēr, Middle English brere — a prickly bush, particularly the wild rose. The briar pipe is unrelated: that word came into English from French bruyère, meaning heath, and only later took the same spelling.

The Ferne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Briar's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ferne climbed just as high around 1916, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ferne's path sketches the road Briar is walking now.
Briar is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- It is an everyday English word, so most people can spell it correctly the first time they hear it.
- One straightforward pronunciation across English-speaking countries, with no silent letters or stress traps.
- Works for a boy or a girl with no change of form, spelling or sound.
- Short and stress-first, which sits easily in front of most surnames.
- Belongs to the nature-word group alongside Sage, Wren and Juniper, so it reads as a name rather than an oddity.
- Brier and Bryar both exist, and Briar can be misheard as Brian. Expect a certain amount of spelling it out, though the correction is a quick one.
- The word means thorn, and the phrase 'briar patch' is still in circulation. Most people go straight to the fairy tale instead, but the prickly sense is there in the dictionary.
- It is climbing quickly. A child born now will likely be the only Briar in the class for years, but that may be less true of the classrooms of the 2030s.
- It leans to girls without settling there. A boy named Briar is entirely within the record, and will simply meet the occasional assumption in the other direction.
