Fern is an Old English word for a plant that has been on earth far longer than the language. Fearn named the same thing a thousand years ago, and it is a cousin of the Sanskrit word for a wing — the fronds looked like feathers to whoever named them first. The final e turns the plant into a name on the page.

Where it comes from

The story of Ferne

Plant names for daughters arrived in a group in the nineteenth century, and most of them were flowers — Rose, Violet, Daisy, Lily. Fern is the exception: a plant with no flowers at all, chosen for its shape rather than its bloom, which puts it alongside Ivy and Olive in a small subgroup. Ferns were also a Victorian craze in their own right, collected and pressed and grown in glass cases on a scale that stripped some hillsides bare. The name arrives at exactly that period.

Meaning

fern

Old English fearn is the fern, and the word has relatives across the Indo-European languages, including a Sanskrit word for a wing or a feather — the shared idea being the shape of the frond. The derivation is documented. The final e in this spelling is a nineteenth-century American convention for marking a word as a name, the same one that gives Faye, Maye and Gaye.

Ferne sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1916, with 247 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Ferne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The word is completely familiar and the name is never mispronounced.
  • The plant behind it is concrete, ancient and rather more interesting than a flower.
  • One syllable, which fits any surname without crowding.
What to consider
  • Fern is the standard spelling and the silent e will be dropped by nearly everyone.
  • The name belongs firmly to an earlier American century, though Fern itself has begun to return.
  • A single syllable against a short surname lands abruptly.
