Marry in May and you rue the day. The superstition is Roman: Ovid records that May was unlucky for weddings because the Lemuria, the festival for placating the restless dead, fell in it. Two thousand years later English speakers still repeat the rule without knowing they are avoiding ghosts.

Where it comes from

Our story of Maylen

Our reading is that the May marriage taboo is one of the better documented survivals in English folk practice and its Roman source is explicit. Ovid, in the Fasti, has the goddess Flora explain that May is a bad month for weddings because the Lemuria falls in it, a three-day festival in which the head of a household walked barefoot through the house at midnight throwing black beans over his shoulder to buy off the ghosts of the family dead. Weddings during it were avoided. The rule was recorded in Britain from the medieval period and was still being followed in the nineteenth century, when statistics show a real dip in May marriages in England. Meanwhile the hawthorn is called may in English because it flowers then, and bringing it indoors was separately considered unlucky, which is a second and unrelated superstition attached to the same word.

Not established

Maylen joins May to the -len ending. May is the month, named for the Roman goddess Maia; a clip of Mary, Margaret or Mabel; and the English name for hawthorn blossom, which flowers in that month. The -len ending is an American suffix with no meaning. Which sense of May a family intends is not recoverable. It peaks in 2012.

Maylen sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2012, with 76 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Maylen went to 11 girls in 2025, but Mayleen, Mailen and Maileen are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 74, which makes it the 886th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,974 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 21,720 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 146,115 for Maylen itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
