The story of Maximos
Maximus the Confessor, a seventh-century Byzantine monk and theologian, opposed the imperial compromise on the nature of Christ's will and was tried, mutilated and exiled for it; he is one of the most important thinkers in the Eastern tradition. His name and those of several other saints kept Maximos in continuous Greek use. American records show it with Greek-American families through the twentieth century, and the peak in 2002 sits alongside the very large American rise of Maximus and Max after the film Gladiator in 2000, which lifted the whole family.
Meaning
Greatest
From Latin maximus, the greatest, the superlative of magnus, great. The reading is settled. Greek adopted it as Maximos and it passed into the Eastern church; the -os is the Greek nominative ending, and the Latin form is Maximus.

The Wesly test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Maximos's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Wesly climbed just as high around 1985, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Wesly's path sketches the road Maximos is walking now.
