Wesly
Masculine · “west meadow”
Wesley is one of the very few names that tells you a family's denomination. The story of Wesly
John Wesley's preaching from the 1730s onward created a movement that became one of the largest Protestant denominations in the world, and Methodist families across Britain, America and later Africa and the Caribbean began naming sons for him. That is an unusual mechanism: most surnames become given names through fashion or through honoring a local family, and only a handful, Wesley, Luther, Calvin, Knox, arrive as statements of religious allegiance. Wesley became a general American name in the nineteenth century and shed most of its denominational weight. The Wesly spelling, without the middle e, appears from the twentieth century and is strongest in Haitian-American families; its best year is 1985.
Meaning
west meadow, western clearing
From Old English west and leah, a woodland clearing, giving the western clearing. The same leah ends Langley, Ashley and Ainsley, and survives in modern English as Leigh. The surname is from one of several English places of the name. The dropped e of this spelling is a modern American simplification and changes nothing.

The Nazario test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Wesly's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Nazario climbed just as high around 1947, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Nazario's path sketches the road Wesly is walking now.
Wesly sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
