Maurizio
Masculine · “dark-skinned”
Maurizio is the Italian form of Maurice, and the name means a Moor — a description of complexion that became a saint's name and then an ordinary given name across Catholic Europe. Saint Maurice commanded a Roman legion from Egypt and was martyred in the Alps; the town of Saint-Maurice in Switzerland has kept his cult for sixteen centuries. Its American peak is 1972.

The story of Maurizio
Saint Maurice, according to the tradition, led the Theban Legion, recruited in Egypt, and was executed with his men at Agaunum in the Swiss Alps around 287 for refusing an order. The abbey founded there in 515 is one of the oldest continuously occupied monasteries in the West, and the saint's cult spread throughout the Holy Roman Empire; he was often depicted as a Black knight in medieval German art, most famously in Magdeburg Cathedral. The name became standard in Italy as Maurizio, in France as Maurice, in Germany as Moritz. Italian migration brought Maurizio to America, and its 1972 peak reflects the American-born Italian generation rather than new arrivals.
Meaning
dark-skinned; a Moor
Latin Maurus meant an inhabitant of Mauretania, the Roman province in north-west Africa, and by extension a dark-complexioned person; Mauritius is the adjective formed from it. The derivation is settled. It is worth being precise that the Roman term was geographical first and descriptive second, and that Mauretania has no connection to modern Mauritania beyond the shared root.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Lonney test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Maurizio's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lonney climbed just as high around 1944, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lonney's path sketches the road Maurizio is walking now.
