The story of Mauricio
The Latin name Mauritius grew out of Maurus, a Roman byname marking someone as a Moor, from Mauretania in northwest Africa. It spread through Christian Europe with Saint Maurice, the Roman officer venerated as leader of the Theban Legion, whose shrine in the Swiss Alps gave the town of Saint-Maurice its name and whose cult made him a patron of soldiers across the medieval West. From Mauritius came French Maurice, Italian Maurizio, German Moritz and Dutch Maurits — and Spanish and Portuguese Mauricio, which traveled with those languages into the Americas. The same Latin form is behind the island nation of Mauritius, named by Dutch sailors for Maurits of Nassau at the end of the sixteenth century.
Meaning
Moorish, from Mauretania
The root is the Latin cognomen Maurus, used of someone from Mauretania in northwest Africa; it came to be read as 'dark-skinned'. The extended form Mauritius gave Maurice, Maurizio and Mauricio.

The Damion test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Mauricio's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Damion climbed just as high around 1977, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Damion's path sketches the road Mauricio is walking now.
Mauricio sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Recognized on sight across Spanish, Portuguese and Italian-speaking countries, and instantly linkable to Maurice for English speakers.
- One spelling dominates in Spanish, so it is written the same way in Mexico City, Madrid and Miami.
- Comes with ready-made short forms — Mau, Mauri — that families have used for generations.
- A documented line back to Roman Latin, with a saint's cult behind its spread through Europe.
- In English-only settings the first syllable often gets flattened to 'maw', and some people will reach for Maurice or Morris instead. Most bearers end up deciding early which correction is worth making.
- Four syllables is a lot next to a short surname, and the -cio ending gets misspelled as -tio or -sio by people hearing it for the first time.
- The Portuguese spelling carries an accent, Maurício, which US forms and databases tend to drop.
- It is common enough to be understood everywhere and uncommon enough that a child will likely be the only one in a class — a balance that holds only if you want that quiet.
