Aries is the Latin word for ram, and the name of the constellation that astronomers from Ptolemy onward placed at the head of the zodiac. It has been read aloud in star charts, almanacs and horoscope columns for centuries, which means almost every English speaker recognizes the spelling on sight — even though its use as a given name is genuinely new.

The story of Aries
Aries is simply the Latin noun for a ram, borrowed as the name of a constellation and kept there ever since. Greek tradition attached the star group to the golden-fleeced ram of the Argonaut story, and Ptolemy listed it in the second century among the constellations of the zodiac; Roman and later European astronomers passed the Latin name down unchanged. Because the sun once stood in Aries at the spring equinox, astronomers still call that point the first point of Aries, long after precession moved the stars along. Its jump from sky to birth certificate happened only in recent decades, in the United States and most visibly across the Southwest and the Sun Belt.

The Kenya test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aries's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kenya climbed just as high around 1973, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kenya's path sketches the road Aries is walking now.
Aries is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- A spelling nearly everyone already knows from the zodiac, so it rarely needs to be spelled out letter by letter.
- Ari is a ready-made short form that already works as a name on its own.
- Reads and works in both English and Spanish, which matters in the states where it is most used.
- A meaning that is settled and easy to say in one word: ram.
- It will be confused with Ares, the Greek war god, in speech and in writing. Expect to correct the swapped vowels fairly often.
- The zodiac link is unavoidable: people will assume a late-March or April birthday, and may attach astrology-column ideas about "a typical Aries" to the child.
- Its wave is very recent, so nearly everyone carrying it is young. A boy named Aries is unlikely to meet another one, and adults may hear the name as new rather than familiar.
