The story of Mauri
Maurice spread through Europe on the strength of a soldier-saint said to have led a Roman legion recruited in Egypt, and every language reshaped it: Mauritz in German, Maurizio in Italian, Mauricio in Spanish, Mauri in Finnish. Finnish naming ends men's names in a vowel as a matter of grammar, so Mauri is entirely masculine there and has been for a century. American use runs on a separate track — a short form of Maureen, of Maura or of Maurice, given to daughters largely because the ending sounds like the -i endings that were marking girls' names at the time. The two traditions do not know about each other.

Latin Maurus means an inhabitant of Mauretania, the Roman province across the western end of North Africa, and by extension a person of North African descent — the word behind English Moor. Maurus, Mauritius and Maurice all carry it, and so does the island of Mauritius. The meaning is geographic rather than descriptive in origin, though it acquired a description along the way.
