Where it comes from

Our story of Mattilyn

There is a recognizable shape to this kind of name and it is worth setting out. A long inherited name produces a short form. The long form falls out of use and the short form survives on its own. Then, a generation later, families want something more formal to put on the certificate — but the original long form now sounds too old, so they build a new one by adding a current suffix to the surviving nickname. Mattie gives Mattilyn; Katie gives Katelyn; Ellie gives Ellianna. What results is a name that looks like it must have a Victorian ancestor and does not: the ancestor is Matilda, but Mattilyn does not descend from Matilda, it descends from Matilda's nickname. It peaked in 2012.

Meaning

Germanic "mighty in battle"

Matilda is from Old High German maht, might or strength, plus hild, battle — a genuinely martial name. It was carried by the wife of William the Conqueror and by the twelfth-century Empress Matilda who fought a civil war for the English throne. The etymology is settled. The -lyn ending contributes nothing.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Mattilyn went to 15 girls in 2025, but Matilyn and Mattilynn are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 34, which makes it the 926th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,207 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 47,273 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 107,151 for Mattilyn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Matilda's martial etymology is genuinely strong and sits underneath it.
  • Mattie and Tilly are both established short forms with real histories.
  • It sounds traditional while being a recent construction.
What to consider
  • It does not descend from Matilda directly, so claiming that etymology overstates the link.
  • Mattilyn, Mattilynn and Matalyn all appear.
  • The construction dates it to the 2010s.
