The story of Markie
The Carmen Arvale is a hymn of the Arval Brethren, a priestly college, preserved on an inscription of AD 218 in language so archaic that Romans of that date could barely read it. It calls on Mars to hold back plague and disaster from the fields, to leap on the boundary and stand guard. Other early evidence points the same way: the festivals of Mars cluster in March and October, the start and end of both the campaigning season and the agricultural year, and rites of purification for fields and herds invoke him. The war god of later Rome is a development, not the original. Markie as an American girls' name peaks in 1990.

Latin, most likely "of Mars"
Marcus is generally derived from Mars, the Roman god, though the derivation is not certain and other proposals exist. Markie is an American diminutive of Mark or Marcus with the -ie ending, which by the usual convention reads as feminine. It carries no separate meaning of its own, and which fuller name lies behind it varies by family.

The Genell test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Markie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Genell climbed just as high around 1932, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Genell's path sketches the road Markie is walking now.
