Genell
Feminine · “well born”
Genell puts a man's clipping under a feminine ending, and it has nothing to do with the biological word that shares its first syllable. That word was coined in nineteen nine by a Danish botanist who wanted a term for a unit of heredity, took it from a Greek root about birth, and had no idea it would become one of the most-used words of the following century.

Where it comes from
From A Greek compound meaning well born to Genell
Our story of Genell
The word and the name meet at a root and nowhere else. Greek had an element about birth and descent that turns up in a great many English words, and a Danish scientist reached into it in nineteen nine for a term to describe whatever it was that carried inherited characteristics, since nobody yet knew what that was physically. He wanted something short and free of theory. The name family reached the same root by a completely different road, through a Greek compound meaning well born that became a personal name in antiquity and traveled through Latin and French into English. So the name and the word are cousins at a considerable distance, and neither descends from the other, which is worth saying because the resemblance invites exactly the wrong conclusion.

well born
If the front comes from the clipping of Eugene, the meaning descends from a Greek compound about being well born, and the reading is settled for that name. If it comes from another source, which is possible, the answer differs. The ending contributes nothing lexical. The scientific word is unrelated to the name and was coined independently from the same Greek root.
How the name formed
- A Greek compound meaning well born
- Eugene in English use, clipped to Gene
- An ell ending fixed to the clipping

Pronouncing Genell
juh-NELL
Two syllables with the stress at the back and a soft g. The first syllable is reduced almost to nothing, which is why the ending carries all the weight and why the name sounds longer than its four consonants suggest.

Fashion outlook
Genell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
