The story of Marino
Saint Marinus, by tradition a stonecutter from the Dalmatian island of Rab, took refuge on Monte Titano in the early fourth century; the community he founded became San Marino, and his name became ordinary throughout Italy. It spread as both a given name and a surname, thickest in the Veneto and the south. American records show Marino climbing with the great Italian migration either side of 1900 and peaking in the 1910s, then falling steadily as the second generation chose Marvin, Martin and Mario instead. The surname stayed far more visible than the first name.
