Marcille
Feminine · “of Mars”
Marcille is a French-looking ending on a Roman god's name. Every Marc- name in Europe goes back to Marcus, and Marcus goes back to Mars — it was the name given to a child of the god, in the way that Roman names often claimed a divine connection rather than describing anything. The -ille ending is French and says eel.

The story of Marcille
Marcus was one of a very small set of Roman first names — there were only about eighteen in general use — which is why it turns up constantly in Latin texts and why its derivatives are everywhere in Europe. Marcellus was its diminutive, Marcella the feminine of that, and French produced Marcelle, said in two syllables with the ending sounded. American families receiving the French form wrote it several ways, and Marcille is one: it keeps the French look while spelling the ending in a way an English reader can act on. The result is a name that is neither quite French nor quite English, which describes a great many American names of its period.
Meaningscholars disagree
of Mars
Marcus is generally read as belonging to Mars, the god of war and, earlier, of agriculture and boundaries — Roman religion changed him considerably over time. The derivation is standard and not seriously argued, though as with most very old Roman praenomina it is reconstructed rather than recorded. Marcella and Marcelle are its feminines, and Marcille is a spelling of the second. The god arrives intact through every step; what he meant to the people using the name did not.

Pronouncing Marcille
mar-SEEL
mar-SEEL, two syllables, stress at the back, the ending said as a long e. The French Marcelle is closer to mar-SELL, with a short vowel, so this spelling has actually changed the sound rather than just the look — which most respellings do not.

The Bernece test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Marcille's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Bernece climbed just as high around 1908, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Bernece's path sketches the road Marcille is walking now.
Marcille sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It descends from one of the oldest and best-documented Roman names in Europe.
- Marcy is available as a short form that is already entirely at home in English.
- The stress at the end gives the name a clean finish against a front-stressed surname.
- Marcelle, Marcella and Marcile are all in use, and none of them is common enough to be the default spelling.
- The -ille ending is read as -ill by some English speakers, producing MAR-sill, which is not the intended name.
- It belongs audibly to an earlier American century and has not yet come back into circulation.
