Malasia
Feminine
Malaysia is younger than most of the people named after it. The country was created in 1963 and its name was made for the occasion, from Malaya plus a Latin ending, so a child called Malasia carries a word that is barely sixty years old.

Our story of Malasia
Country names feel ancient and often are not. When Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak and North Borneo federated in 1963 the new state needed a name, and Malaysia was assembled the way European scholars had been assembling territory names for centuries: a stem plus a Latin ending that means the land of. The word had floated around in nineteenth-century geography for the archipelago as a whole, but as the name of a state it dates precisely. American parents using it as a girl's name are doing something the data shows happening across the map: Asia, India, Kenya, Chyna, Egypt and Malaysia all appear in the records, and the geography is doing the work of a sound rather than a place. The y usually goes, because English has no need of it, and Malasia is the result.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Malasia is a respelling of the country name Malaysia, adopted at the formation of the federation in 1963 from Malaya and the Latin territorial ending -sia. Malay itself is much older, but the compound is a twentieth-century political coinage. As a personal name it carries no inherited meaning; the peak is 2006.
Pronouncing Malasia
muh-LAY-zhuh
Three syllables, stress on the second. Some say muh-LAY-see-uh with four, which the spelling without a y supports.

The Aza test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Malasia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Aza climbed just as high around 1926, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Aza's path sketches the road Malasia is walking now.
Malasia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The place behind it is real, current and easy to point to on a map.
- Mala and Mal work as short forms.
- The spelling without the y is the more phonetic of the two.
- The standard spelling of the country has a y, which invites correction.
- Two pronunciations of the ending are in use.
- It has no meaning as a personal name, only as a place.
