Where it comes from

The story of Maddyson

James Madison drafted the Constitution and was the fourth president, which made the surname prominent, and it was used in small numbers as a boy's name in the nineteenth century. In 1984 the film Splash has a mermaid choose a name from a Manhattan street sign — Madison Avenue — and a character objects that Madison is not a name. Within a decade it was, and by 2001 it was second in the country for girls. That kind of vertical rise always produces respellings, and Maddyson, Madisyn, Madyson and Madisen all appear in the 1990s and 2000s. Maddyson peaks in 2009, on the far side of Madison's own high point.

Meaningscholars disagree

Son of Maud, or son of Matthew

The surname Madison is a patronymic, and the base name is disputed: Maud, the medieval form of Matilda, and Matthew are both proposed, and different bearer families may descend from either. Whatever the answer, the literal sense is son of, which is the small irony sitting inside one of the most popular girls' names of the last thirty years. The y of Maddyson is an American respelling with no separate history.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Maddyson went to 24 girls in 2025, but Madison, Maddison and Madyson are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 5,751, which makes it the 34th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,204 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 279 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 66,969 for Maddyson itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
