Madison means son of Maud. It was a surname, then a president's name, then a New York avenue, and then in 1984 a film in which a mermaid takes her name from a street sign. Within twenty years it was one of the most common girls' names in the country. Maddisyn is the fourth-generation respelling, with a doubled d and a y that erases the son.

Where it comes from

The story of Maddisyn

Splash was released in March 1984. In it a mermaid, asked to choose a name, reads Madison Avenue off a street sign, and a character remarks that Madison is not a name. In 1984 he was right: the name appears in the girls' data at rank 625 that year, essentially from nothing. By 1997 it was in the top ten. There is no clearer documented case in the American record of a single scene creating a name, and the screenwriters appear to have intended the joke rather than the outcome. Everything after that is respelling. Madisyn, Maddison, Madyson and Maddisyn are attempts to keep a name that has become enormous while marking a particular child's copy of it as distinct, and Maddisyn peaks in 2013, at the far end of that process.

Meaning

English surname, son of Maud

A patronymic surname from the medieval given name Maud, itself a Norman form of Matilda, from Germanic maht and hild, might and battle. So the literal reading is son of Matilda. The y in the modern spelling replaces the o of son and removes the visible patronymic; the doubled d follows the English rule that a double consonant keeps the preceding vowel short.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Maddisyn went to 13 girls in 2025, but Madisyn and Madisynn are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 187, which makes it the 773rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,112 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 8,595 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 123,636 for Maddisyn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
