Madisyn
Feminine · “son of Maud”
Madisyn is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 17,374 girls against 5 boys since 1880.
Behind this spelling stands Madison, an English surname carried into American life by the country's fourth president and by the Manhattan avenue named after him — and turned into a girl's first name by a 1984 film whose mermaid heroine picks her name off a street sign. Madisyn is the version that swaps in a y, keeping the same three easy beats and the same well-worn short form, Maddie.

The story of Madisyn
Madison began as an English family name, one of the many built from a parent's name plus -son, and it reached American prominence through James Madison. From him it passed to Madison Avenue, and from that street sign to the screen: the 1984 film Splash gave the surname to a female character, and within a couple of years it was appearing on birth certificates for girls. Madisyn is one of several respellings that followed once the name was firmly established — Madisen, Madyson and Madisyn all trading on a sound everyone already recognized. The y-spelling arrived after the parent name and has followed its curve, rising with it and easing back with it.

"son of Maud" — from an English surname
The surname is most often traced to Madde, a medieval English pet form of Maud (itself from Matilda), plus -son. A competing reading takes it from Mathieson, "son of Matthew." Either way the literal sense is a patronymic, which is why the name's history sits with boys' surnames long before it belonged to girls.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Diann test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Madisyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Diann climbed just as high around 1947, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Diann's path sketches the road Madisyn is walking now.
Madisyn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Pronunciation needs no explaining: anyone who has met a Madison reads it correctly on sight.
- Comes with long-established short forms — Maddie, Maddy, Mads — already in wide everyday use.
- Sits on a documented surname line running back through American history to medieval English patronymics.
- Common enough to be instantly familiar, yet a child with this exact spelling will likely be the only one in her school.
- The spelling will need repeating for life. Madison is the default, and Madisen and Madyson compete alongside it, so forms, rosters and coffee cups will often come back as something else.
- The -syn ending places the name in a fairly narrow window of American naming, which currently reads as belonging to teenagers and young adults rather than as classic or brand-new.
- Written down, Madisyn is distinctive; spoken aloud, it is simply Madison, so expect people to assume the common spelling until corrected.
- Maddie is shared with a large family of Madeline and Madelyn names, so the short form may not be hers alone in a friend group.
