The story of Janie
The root is the Hebrew Yochanan, 'God is gracious', which passed into Greek as Ioannes and into Latin as Iohannes. Medieval French turned the masculine into Jehan and the feminine into Jehanne, and English speakers reshaped that into Jane. Janie is the affectionate English diminutive, formed the same way Annie came from Anne and Sadie from Sarah — first a household nickname, then a name written on records in its own right. It has been in continuous American use since the earliest years of national name-keeping.

The trade-off
- Reads correctly on first sight for English speakers; no one has to be told how to say it.
- Comes with Jane built in as a formal alternative, so the same person has a playground name and a résumé name.
- Part of a name family documented for two thousand years, with sisters in French, Spanish, Italian, German and Irish.
- Short, two syllables, and easy to pair with longer surnames.
- Because it began as a nickname, some people will assume the full name is Jane or Janet and quietly correct the record. Writing Janie on the birth certificate settles it, but expect the question.
- Janey, Jaynie and Jani all exist, so spelling it aloud will become routine.
- It still sits most heavily with older generations, which means a child named Janie is likely to be the only one in her class while sharing the name with women several decades her senior.
- Aerosmith's 1989 song 'Janie's Got a Gun' is well known to some listeners and has a dark subject. It rarely comes up around a child, but it is worth knowing about.
