Safiya
Feminine · Arabic roots · “pure”
Safiya comes from the Arabic Ṣafiyya, built on a root meaning clear, pure, unclouded — the same idea as water you can see through. It has been carried for some fourteen centuries across Arabic-speaking lands, and traveled with the language into Turkish, Hausa, Swahili and Bosnian, picking up a new spelling in each. In English it reads exactly as it sounds: three open syllables that end on a vowel.
How old is the name Safiya?

The story of Safiya
The name is Arabic, from the root that gives ṣafā, to be clear or pure. Its earliest famous bearer is Safiyya bint Huyayy, one of the wives of the Prophet Muhammad, which secured the name across the whole Muslim world very early on. From there it spread with Islam rather than by conquest of one language: Safiye in Ottoman Turkish, Safiyya in Hausa-speaking northern Nigeria, Safiya in Swahili East Africa, Safija in Bosnia. In the United States it arrived with immigration in the later twentieth century and has been climbing steadily since, which is why its bearers here skew young.
Meaning
pure, clear, serene
The Arabic root ṣ-f-w carries the sense of purity and clarity; the related noun ṣafī also means a sincere friend or trusted confidante, and that second shade is often mentioned alongside the first.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Safiya went to 168 girls in 2025, but Safia, Safiyyah and Safiyah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 337, which makes it the 641st most-given girls’ name of the year — 685 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 4,769 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 9,567 for Safiya itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Demetrius test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Safiya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Demetrius climbed just as high around 1975, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Demetrius's path sketches the road Safiya is walking now.
Safiya is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds for English readers, so it survives roll call and voicemail without a spelling lesson.
- Recognized immediately across Arabic, Turkish, Hausa, Swahili and Bosnian communities — one name that works in several languages at once.
- A documented history reaching back to the earliest generation of Islam, with continuous use ever since.
- Has a settled short form, Safi, already in real use rather than invented on the spot.
- It shares its territory with Sofia and Sophia, which are extremely common and come from an entirely unrelated Greek word for wisdom. Expect the occasional mishearing and the occasional assumption that Safiya is a variant of them.
- Several spellings are all correct — Safiya, Safiyya, Safiyah, Safia — so whichever you choose, she will spend a lifetime spelling it out for forms and coffee cups.
- It remains uncommon in the United States, so she is likely to be the only one in her school. Some children love that and some find it tiring; the name itself is easy enough to say that it rarely becomes a burden.
