The story of Safia
Safiyya bint Huyayy was the daughter of a Jewish chief of Khaybar and became one of the Prophet's wives; the accounts of her marriage are much debated. The root behind her name also gives Mustafa and Safwan. Safia is one of several spellings and is in current American use.
Meaning
pure, chosen, best friend
From the Arabic safiyya, 'pure' or 'chosen', from the root s-f-w, which also gives Mustafa, 'the chosen'. Safiyya can also mean a close confidante. The Arabic is ordinary and the reading undisputed.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Safia went to 75 girls in 2025, but Safiya, Safiyyah and Safiyah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 337, which makes it the 641st most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,746 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 4,769 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 21,430 for Safia itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Alanda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Safia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Alanda climbed just as high around 1976, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Alanda's path sketches the road Safia is walking now.
Safia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The pure-and-chosen meaning is transparent and strong.
- Safi and Fia are two short forms, both with real use.
- Three syllables of open vowels, which carries unusually well.
- Several transliterations are in circulation.
- The emphatic s of the Arabic is lost in English.
- It reads as specifically Muslim.
