Madalynne
Feminine · “Aramaic magdala”
The most famous cake in literature is named after a cook. Madeleines are small shell-shaped sponges from Commercy in Lorraine, traditionally attributed to a servant called Madeleine, and Proust gave one to his narrator in 1913, where the taste of it dipped in tea opens seven volumes of involuntary memory.

The story of Madalynne
The passage in Proust is short and its consequences are enormous. The narrator, dipping a madeleine in lime-blossom tea, is overwhelmed by a feeling he cannot place, works at it, and recovers the memory of his aunt giving him the same thing as a child in Combray, and with it the whole of a childhood he thought lost. The episode establishes the book's method: memory recovered involuntarily through sensation rather than through effort, which Proust distinguishes sharply from the deliberate kind. The cake itself is a regional speciality with a contested origin story, usually credited to a servant or cook named Madeleine who improvised it for a duke, in one version Stanislas Leszczynski at Commercy in the eighteenth century. Whether she existed is not established. The name behind both is a Galilean town called Tower.
Meaning
Aramaic magdala, a tower
Madeline descends from Magdalene, meaning of Magdala, a town on the Sea of Galilee whose name is Aramaic for a tower. Mary Magdalene is identified by her town rather than by a family name. Madalynne is a modern American respelling combining the -lynn ending with the older name. It peaks in the American data in 1921.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Madalynne went to 11 girls in 2025, but Madaline and Madalyne are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 40, which makes it the 920th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,940 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 40,182 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 146,115 for Madalynne itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Albirta test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Madalynne's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Albirta climbed just as high around 1905, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Albirta's path sketches the road Madalynne is walking now.
Madalynne sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
