Where it comes from

The story of Lynzie

Lindsay traveled north as a surname with a Norman family who took Scottish lands, and it became one of the great names of the Scottish nobility. It crossed to America as a surname, became a boy's given name, and then moved to girls in the twentieth century — the same route Kelsey, Shelby and Ashley took at the same time. The respellings followed. Lindsay, Lindsey, Linzy and Lynzie are all in the record, and this one changes both vowels and the consonant while leaving the sound completely untouched, which is a considerable achievement in four substitutions.

Lincoln's island

Lindsey is the northern of the three ancient divisions of Lincolnshire, and the name is usually read as Lindon plus the Old English eg, an island — Lindon being the older British name that also gave Lincoln. The island is literal: the district was high ground surrounded by fen and marsh for most of its history. A competing reading takes the second element differently, and the first element's own meaning, probably a word for a pool, is reconstructed rather than recorded.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The z makes explicit a sound the usual spelling hides, so nobody misreads the middle.
  • There is a genuine English district and a genuine Scottish family behind it.
  • Lyn works as a short form and is a complete name already.
What to consider
  • Lindsay and Lindsey are the spellings everyone knows, and this one will be rewritten as one of them.
  • Four letters differ from the standard spelling and none of them can be heard, so the name gets dictated in full every time.
  • The z reads as a deliberate flourish rather than a variant, which some readers notice more than others.
