Our story of Lyndie
Ours, offered as ours. Linden wood is light and does not split when struck, which made it the standard material for shields across Germanic Europe, and Old English poetry uses the word for the tree to mean the shield itself. So a name that now reads as gentle carries a piece of battle equipment in it. The tree was also the village meeting place across Germany, which is the softer half of the same word.

lime tree, or soft
Germanic lind is the linden or lime tree and also means soft or flexible; shields were made of its wood, so lind came to stand for a shield in poetry. A separate derivation from Spanish linda, pretty, is also offered.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
