Where it comes from

The story of Lucky

That English had no native word for luck until the fifteenth century is a genuine curiosity — earlier writers used hap, which survives in happen and perhaps, or wyrd, which meant something closer to fate. Luck arrived from the Low Countries with card and dice games. As a given name Lucky appears in American records for both sexes from the 1930s, usually as a registered nickname.

Meaning

fortunate

From Middle Dutch luk, a shortening of gheluc, happiness or fortune; English borrowed it in the fifteenth century, apparently through gaming, and had previously used words like hap and speed for the same idea.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • An ordinary English word, so nobody has to be taught to say or spell it.
  • The word's late arrival in English is a genuinely good fact.
  • Warm and immediately friendly in sound.
What to consider
  • It is used for both sexes and reads as a nickname to most people.
  • It names a condition rather than a quality, which strangers will remark on.
  • It is very commonly a dog's name, which will be mentioned.

Nobody names a baby alone.
