The story of Lucienne
Lucius was among the oldest Roman first names and Lucianus one of the family names built on it; Lucian of Samosata wrote the satirical dialogues that Erasmus and Swift both learned from. Saint Lucian of Antioch, a theologian martyred in 312, made the name Christian, and French took it up as Lucien. Lucienne followed as the feminine and was ordinary in France and Belgium through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. American records show it thinly, concentrated in Louisiana, New England and Franco-American communities, with a peak in the 1910s; Haitian families have used it steadily since. Lucienne Boyer, who recorded Parlez-moi d'amour in 1930, is its best-known bearer.
