The story of Lucas
The two books were separated early because the gospels were collected together and Acts was not, but they are addressed to the same reader, share a vocabulary and a style, and the second opens by referring back to the first. Read as one work they amount to roughly a quarter of the New Testament, more than the letters attributed to Paul, which makes their author the largest single contributor to the collection. Tradition identifies him as a companion of Paul and, on the strength of one line in Colossians, as a physician; the text itself names no one. The name is regional rather than descriptive: Lucanus meant someone from Lucania, the mountainous region in the instep of Italy, so it functions like a surname and says nothing about light.
Meaning
Latin Lucanus, from Lucania
Lucas is the Latin and Greek form of Luke, from Lucanus, meaning a man from Lucania, a region of southern Italy. It is a place name rather than a description, and the popular connection with lux, light, is a later association. The name is overwhelmingly male; the small female peak is 2004.

The Venecia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lucas's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Venecia climbed just as high around 1960, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Venecia's path sketches the road Lucas is walking now.
Lucas sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
