The story of Louanne
Clovis, the first king to unite the Franks, carried the name in its oldest recorded shape, and every later Louis is the same word after five centuries of French sound change — one of the clearest cases in European naming of a name surviving intact while becoming unrecognizable. Louise crossed to English in the eighteenth century and to America with it, and Lou followed. What Lou then did in American naming was structural: it became a syllable available to attach, and it attached most often to Anne, which was doing the same job from the other side. The closed-up spelling is the last stage of that.
Meaning
famous in battle
Louis descends through French from a Frankish compound of hlud, famous or loud, and wig, battle or war — the same name as the German Ludwig and the earlier Clovis, which is the same word again with the sounds worn down differently. Eighteen kings of France carried it. Louise is its feminine and Lou the short form of both. The Anne half is Hebrew Hannah, favor or grace. Two settled meanings, side by side, neither modifying the other.

loo-ANN, two syllables, stress at the back. There is no pause in the middle; writing it as one word is what says so. Some say LOO-ann, weighting the front, which is the older two-word reading surviving inside the single name.

The Arliss test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Louanne's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Arliss climbed just as high around 1933, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Arliss's path sketches the road Louanne is walking now.
Louanne sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
