Where it comes from

Our story of Lizette

Ours, offered as ours. English borrowed -ette from French and then did something French would not: attached it to native words. Kitchenette, launderette, novelette, statuette and leatherette are all English inventions using a French ending, and the suffix carries a faint sense of small and sometimes of imitation. On a name it means only small and affectionate, which is what it originally did — Lizette is little Liz and nothing more complicated.

Meaning

my God is an oath

From Hebrew Elisheva through Elizabeth; the French diminutive -ette, meaning small, is added to the clipped form. The z is an English respelling of the French s in Lisette.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lizette went to 29 girls in 2025, but Lisette is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 58, which makes it the 902nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,759 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 27,712 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 55,423 for Lizette itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning with one of Europe's largest name families behind it.
  • Liz and Lizzy are both established short forms with long records.
  • Elizabeth stands behind it as a fuller formal option.
What to consider
  • Lisette is the French spelling and both are in use.
  • Seven letters and two syllables, manageable but not short.
  • It is close to Lissette, Lizeth and Lisbeth in an American ear.
